Sternsingen2 kl

The procession of the Rapperswil Sternsingers (carol-singers) departs on Saturday 23rd December 2017 at 6.00 pm coinciding precisely with the sixth chime from the Capuchin Monastery through the dark alleys of the Old Town onto the main square and stages the nativity play.

The long procession with small and large angels, the announcing angel, astrologers, Mary and Joseph, the shepherds and the three holy kings together with sheep, horses, donkeys and camels - which are provided on each occasion by Knies Children's Zoo - makes its way to the illuminated steps of the castle.

'O Welt, du dunkle Gasse, die alten Schranken brich! Der Eintracht öffne Dich' cries the announcing angel from the highest landing of the castle steps down onto the densely packed spectators on the main square of Rapperswil.

The play, written by Pius Rickenmann at the end of the 50s, lasts around 30 minutes. The play ends with 'Silent Night, Holy Night' and the ringing bells of the Stadtpfarrkirche and the approx. 100 participating carol-singers then move away through the alleys.

The spectators line the route of the procession in the Old Town's alleyways and watch the play on the main square gathered closely to one another. Admission is free.
