The history of the Chlauses begins in 1935 with the creation of the Chlaus Commission by Burkard Senn. At the time a mere six men paraded through the agrarian communes whereas now there are over 30 Chlauses and Schmutzlis. The Etzelchlauses are part of the Rapperswil-Jona Tourism Association.
The annual Arrival of Chlaus takes place on 2nd December at 5.30 pm on the main square. Coming from Etzelwald, the Chlauses arrive solemnly in the picturesque centre of our city. During the subsequent house visits or at nurseries, the Etzelchlauses appear as men who have their heart in the right place. They bring gifts, tell stories and answer questions posed by children. Above all, they seek to spread happiness during Advent and get children into the mood for Christmas.
The illustrated book commemorating 75 years of the existence of the legendary Etzelchlauses in 2010 can be obtained for CHF 49.00 at Tourist Information Rapperswil-Jona. The stories, verse and impressions it contains will revive the Chlaus tradition for young and old alike.
