CAPUCHIN MONASTERY

At the beginning of the 17th century the Rapperswilers were planning to build a Capuchin monastery just outside the gates of the city but then changed its location in 1606 to Endingerhorn to the Capuchin tip.

The monastery church was consecrated in 1607. The original structure has been largely preserved. Between 1669 and 1968 the Einsiedlerhaus next door (the oldest building in the city from the old estate belonging to Einsiedeln Abbey) served as a wool weaving mill for the Swiss Capuchin province. The Antonius Grotto was built in 1925.

The Capuchin monks have continued to live at the monastery to this day. It is also important to mention that the monastery belongs to the citizens of Rapperswil-Jona and not to the order.

The Capuchin monks keep a lovely, richly stocked garden at the monastery. The garden opens its doors to visitors once a year. The monastery offers church services with praise dancing, guided tours of the monastery, a monastery shop and much more.

Experiencing monastery life for yourself

Certain weeks it is possible to experience monastery life as a short-term or long-term guest at the Capuchin Monastery

Sharing in prayer, work, discussion and silence is an essential condition for staying at the monastery.
